DESCO Two Diver Telephone - 2026

The DESCO Two Diver Telephone became popular for its reliability and classic look. Over the years the diver telephone has evolved to meet the needs of a more demanding diving industry. 

Separate volume controls for the diver and tender permit adjustment for optimum quality of communication. Binding posts are provided for Diver 1 and Diver 2, external power, and external speaker. Jacks are provided for a headset to be used, and a jack for an audio recorder.  

The telephone is housed in a handsome, highly finished, shock resistant wood case. 

In 2025 the telephone went through some significant design changes.

Evolution in the electronics industry have required changes in the DESCO diver telephone.

The electronc chip that drives the circuit board had been superceded over the years and has made it necessary to redesign the circuit board. This happened about five years ago and a board redesign was required. We could not make telephones for almost three years while a new circuit board was created.

In that time other issues came up.

The University loudhailer speaker that has been installed in all the DESCO telephones since the 1960s was discontinued by the manufacturer. We had to design a new faceplate for the telephone to accept a standard 4 inch speaker. A name brand speaker was chosen rather than a generic one so consistent quality could be expected.

The 12 volt lantern battery was discontinued. The last maker of these lantern batteries, Ray O Vac, has ended production of them. The new telephones will be sold with a rechargeable 12 volt 7 amp hour sealed Lead acid battery. The wood case was redesigned to accept the new battery. The change from the loudspeaker opened up space in the back of the case to handle this size battery. The access door was moved to the side so the battery sits behind the speaker.

A standard 12 volt SLA rechargeable battery and charger are provided with the telephone. 

DESCO will be issuing instructions to current DESCO telephone owners on how to use a rechargeable SLA battery to replace the lantern battery.
