Leather faceplate gasket for the third generation Morse commercial diving helmets. The first and second AJ Morse and Son helmets had a smaller faceplate. In the 1930s Morse developed an new bonnet with a larger volume shell and a bigger faceplate assembly. The faceplate was machined to recess the gasket into the frame. This helped prevent the gasket from being distorted or squeezed out of the gap. It was an adaptation of the recessed neck ring detail and serves the same function. Gasket size is 5 7/16" ID x 6 1/2" OD x 1/8" thk. The gasket is shipped dry and the customer can use either Neatsfoot Oil or Olive Oil as a preservative and conditioner.
