The term "light" is historically accurate when referring to the window glass in a diving helmet. In nautical terms a fixed window on a ship could be referred to as a light, as in skylight or deadlight.
All A J Morse & Son Diving Helmets made by DESCO use Borosilicate Glass (Pyrex) lights. Borosilicate Glass has much better temperature stability than normal glass. The Mark V helmets used lights with bevelled edges which conform to the frame.
Unlike the Mark V Diving Helmet the commercial helmet lights are not bevelled. Even though they are made from the same material they are less expensive by eliminating the labor of grinding bevels.
First and second generation Morse Commercial Diving Helmets used a smaller diameter faceplate than the third generation helmets. This light is 4 1/2" in diameter. The third generation Morse Commercial Helmets used a larger faceplate with a 5 1/8" diameter glass light.
